| ✔ | 가사의 기원은 영국 절대주의의 전성기를 이뤘고, '국가와 결혼했다'며 평생 독신으로 살다간 영국 여왕엘리자베스 1세와 26세였던 프랑수아 앙주공작 사이에 오갔던 혼담을 빗댄 것으로 알려져 있다. 1579년 당시 46세였던 엘리자베스 1세는 생애 마지막 구혼자가 될 것 같다며 고심했고, 혼담 내용도 구체적으로 진행되었다고 한다. 프랑스 왕위를 위해 프랑수아 앙주 공작은 여왕의 환심을 사기 위해 노력했고 엘리자베스 1세도 그를 좋아해 '개구리(frog)'라는 별명까지 붙여줄 정도로 가까워졌었다. 다양한 가사가 존재하는데 Woody Guthrie의 버전에서는 "Hey-hey," Bob Dylan의 버전에서는 "uh-huh"의 후렴구를 사용하고 동요로는 결혼이 성사된 Burl Ives의 버전이 가장 친숙하다. 1. 개구리가 말을 타고, 칼과 창을 옆구리에 끼고 청혼을 하러 간다. 2. 종종 찾아갔던 쥐양의 집에 도착해 크게 3번 문을 두드린다. 3. "쥐양, 집에 있어요?" "네, 앉아서 실 만들고 있어요." 4. 개구리는 쥐양을 무릎에 앉히고 말한다. "나랑 결혼해 줄래요?" 5. "삼촌 쥐의 허락없이는 개굴씨랑 결혼할 수 없어요." 6. 삼촌 쥐는 웃으면서 옆구리살 흔들어 재끼고 조카가 신부가 되는 모습을 생각해본다. 7. 삼촌 쥐는 조카에게 예복을 사주기 위해 마을로 달려 간다. 8. 결혼식 피로연은 속이 빈 나무가 있는 곳에서 하기로 한다. 9. 첫번 째로 나방이 날아와 식탁보를 펼쳤다. 10. 다음은 풍뎅이가 물주전자를 사온다. 11. 다음은 벌이 그의 무릎에 앉아 앵앵거린다. 12. 다음은 작고 까만 벼룩이 벌과 춤을 춘다. 13. 다음은 암소부인이 와서 춤을 추려 했는데 어떻게 출지 몰라 한다. [새드 엔딩] 14. 다음은 작고 까만 진드기가 와서 진딧물을 만들어 먹는다. 15. 다음은 큰 까만 뱀이 와서 웨딩 케이크를 모두 먹어치운다. 16. 다음은 늙은 회색 고양이가 와서 쥐들을 잡아 먹는다. 17. 개구리는 놀라 팔짝 뛰어 올랐고 흰 비둘기(오리)가 그를 잡아 먹는다.
