미국 곰은 총이 없다는 걸 알고 무섭게 쫓아왔지만 일본 곰은 떨어진 귀걸이를 줏어 갖다주기 위해 쫓아왔다. 그런데 도망가라고 해놓고 왜 귀걸이는 줏어줬을까? 여기에 대해 몇가지 이야기가 있다. 첫번째는 재미로, 두번째는 작사가가 알려지지 않은 것이 맞다면 구전되어 온 가사가 변형된 것이라는 것. 곰이 아닌 '작은 새'가 도망치라고 충고했는데 그것이 '곰'으로 바뀌어 알려지게 되었다고 한다. 작사가가 직접 해명하는 편이 가장 빠를 텐데 현재는 작사가가 馬場祥弘로 되어 있지만 1972년 방송에 발표될 당시에는 不詳(미상)으로 되어 있었다. 그후 일본의 역사 공상물 소설가인 馬場祥弘가 작사와 작곡을 했다며 주장했고, 편곡가는 작사가가 확실하지 않다며 다른 주장을 했다. 일본저작권협회에서는 馬場祥弘를 작사가로 등재시켰지만 1971년 제13회 세계 잼버리 대회가 일본에서 개최되었는데 이때 이 곡이 들어왔다는 설이 있어 작곡가로는 인정하지 않았다. 馬場祥弘는 곰이 평화주의자여서 어두운 숲에서 도망치라 한 것이라고 다소 식상한 설명을 했다.
