✔	19세기 초반 잉글랜드의 동인도 회사에서는 식민지였던 아일랜드인들을 차출해 전쟁터로 보냈었는데 화자의 남편인 조니도 그 중에 한 명이었다. 전쟁에서 한쪽 눈과 팔, 다리를 잃고 집으로 돌아온 남편 조니를 보고 애통하는 아내의 노래로 전쟁의 비극을 담고 있다. 1867년 Joseph B. Geoghegan에 의해 처음 출판되었고, 가수에 따라 가사가 조금씩 다르다.

✔	아일랜드 출신의 미국 작곡자이자 밴드마스터였던 Patrick Gilmore에겐 Annie라는 여동생이 있었고 Annie에겐 북군의 포병 장교인 John O'Rourke라는 약혼자가 있었다. Patrick은 사랑스런 여동생을 위해 약혼자인 John의 무사귀환을 바라며 이 노래를 제작했다고 한다. 발표 당시에는 Louis Lambert라는 가명을 사용했다고 한다. 이후 남북전쟁 시기의 이야기를 담고 있는 미국 영화 대부분이 이 곡을 삽입해 사용했다.
