'Lorelei'란 잠긴 바위라는 뜻이 있으며, 독일의 라인 강 중류 강기슭에 있는 큰 바위로 요정 바위라고도 불린다. 라인강에서 강폭이 가장 좁은 곳이어서 강물의 흐름이 빠른데다 강바닥에 많은 바위들이 솟아 있어 배 사고가 잦은 곳이었다. 이곳에는 로렐라이라는 아가씨가 연인에게 실연 당해 라인 강에 몸을 던진 후 아름다운 목소리로 뱃사람을 유혹하여 난파시키는 바다 요정으로 변했다는 전설이 얽혀 있다. 이 전설은 수많은 문학작품과 노래들의 주제가 되었는데, 하이네가 지은 시는 Friedrich Silcher, Franz Liszt, Clara Schumann 등 25명 이상의 작곡가들에 의해 곡이 붙여졌다. 그 중 Friedrich Silcher의 곡이 가장 대표적이다.
